One way that is easy to do to improve the aesthetics of the home is to install a new backsplash in your kitchen. There are many types of tiles that can be used to do this. Kitchen tile is easy to install depending on the type of tiling you use.

The easiest and most cost effective type of kitchen tile is the peel and stick type. This does not require any other know how to install. While this type of tile will not improve the cost or value of the home, it will work well to make the kitchen look better.

You simply measure the area of the backsplash and get the square footage. This is done by measuring the length and width and then multiplying those numbers together. If the area is two feet by four feet then you will need eight square feet of material. It is best to get an extra foot or two in case of improper placement of a tile that needs to removed and redone.

Clean the area where you will install the tiles. You do not have to remove any of the tiling that is already there with the peel and stick type of tiling. Simply take off the backing and put the new tiles where you want them. You should have a level to make sure that the tiles are being placed straight and even.

Ceramic tiling can make for the perfect kitchen tile. It comes in many colors and designs. You can get a dramatic look in your kitchen by having the backsplash done in an artistic manner. You can even get ceramic tiles that look like colored glass to create a stained glass feel even if there is no window in the kitchen.

Installation for this type of kitchen tile will be more extensive than the peel and stick type of tiling. The first thing you need to do is remove any existing tile or backsplash. Then clean the area free of debris. Then you will want to decide where you want to place the tiles. After you have decided this, you should make a straight line that you will follow when placing the tiles on the wall.

A product called mastic is the best type of adhesive to use when tiling a backsplash. You will want to lay some mastic on a small area of the backsplash. You can do this by using a trowel. The trowel should have ridges on it to help the tile to adhere. Make sure that the mastic is smooth and even.

Then press the kitchen tile into the mastic. Continue doing this until all of the backsplash has been completed. Once the mastic has set, usually overnight, you will want to caulk the tiles to make sure that they are water tight. Any moisture that gets in under the tiles will cause them to lift up. This is the same procedure that would be used with stone tiles as well.

I just helped someone install a kitchen backplash with the ceramic tile that looks like colored glass. It's really quite cool.
