One of the oldest types of desks that have been used throughout history is the secretary desks. In the days before electricity, computers and typewriters, secretaries would handle all correspondence for the boss with the aid of a secretary desk. A secretary desk is a tall narrow piece of furniture that has a fold table that could be used for writing.

In those days, most men who could afford a secretary worked from a home office. The secretaries were also men who were hired and who would work side by side with the boss. These men typically owned large estates that would require many hours of books and ledger entries. The secretary desks were perfect for this task.

The secretary desks typically come in two pieces. There is a base that is set on four legs. On top of this, there is a hutch where the writing desk could be lowered when in use. Inside the hutch are areas where books, ledgers, stationary and other items used in business would be stored. When not in use, the writing desk would be closed and the hutch would be locked.

The most common material for the secretary desks is wood. There is no limit to the type of wood that is used in secretary desks and most were dependent upon the available wood in the area. The very wealthy could afford to have the desk imported or made with imported exotic woods.

When big business moved from the home and into the office, the secretary desks moved as well. These desks were utilized for many hundreds of years. As modern technology began to take over and the secretary moved from writing by hand to using typewriters for correspondence, the secretary desks became more of a conversation piece than a viable piece of office equipment.

Many families still hung on to their desks as many were beautiful pieces of art. These were handed down from generation to generation. Some are still being used for the purpose that they were intended for. Many others are simply a lovely stand in the corner of the home.

The good news is that they are now making a comeback in modern day life. Antique hunters are searching for these old desks to set up in their homes. These desks are perfect for the apartment or small home dweller as they are very compact when not in use. The may a perfect companion for the laptop computer as well.

Many companies are now offering these lovely secretary desks as a part of their lines of desks.
