How Much Will a Hardwood Floor Cost to Have Installed?

We all like the way they look, but are hardwood floors in your budget?  There are plenty of things to consider when you are trying to figure out how much your hardwood floor cost is going to be.  Take a look at each and every one of them.  If you find the price too much, consider doing it yourself or using a different product to make it more affordable.

Labor

If you are not going to do the floors yourself, this may run you just as much as the actual cost of the flooring.  If you find that the overall cost is way too much, look at how you can save money on labor by doing all or a portion of the job yourself.  You may also find that at times, by using a more expensive product, you can actually save overall because of the reduction in labor.

Sub Floor

If you are going to have a standard floor put down, meaning regular hardwood floors that will need a sub floor put in, nail down the floor boards, sand down, stain and refinish, you could be looking at a price of about $7/sq ft. This is about double what the supplies will cost you. By doing portions of this yourself, that price goes down and you save money.

Wood & Supplies

The flooring is obviously one of the larger costs of the project as well. Depending on the type of floor and wood that you are using, you can spend anywhere from $1/sq ft to well over $3/ sq ft. This is where you may want to use a finished product. You are also going to have to buy things like stain, glue, nails and polyurethane to get the job done.

When you use a finished product, such as floating hardwood floors, you will more than likely be paying somewhere in the middle of that price range, but your installation costs go down dramatically. As this is the easiest of all the floors to out down, you will probably have to pay about $1-$1.50/sq ft for the installation. However, you are also going to be eliminating the cost of the sub floor installation (you won’t need one) and also the staining and finishing as this product comes ready to go. Spend more on the wood, but save a ton everywhere else.

Furniture

This is a cost that is often hidden on the bill somewhere, but very few companies are just going to throw this in with their service.  If they are moving furniture around from one room to the next to get the job done, you are going to pay a healthy buck to have it done.

As you can see, costs can add up rather quickly if you are not careful.  Don’t be shy about shopping around and definitely try and work a bargain with everyone you talk to.  Get at least 3 estimates on everything to make sure you are getting a fair price.

Before planning to install hardwood, it is better you budget first the materials that you will need. Do a reseach or ask close friends about the cost for labor in installing hardwood. With that, you'll avoid stressful problems.
